Well Played: Intergenerational Play
Special Issue Call for Proposals
How does a parent know if the games that their child is playing is helpful, harmful, appropriate, challenging or intimidating for their child? One excellent way is for the parent and child to game together. In this special issue of Well Played we are looking for cases where parents and their kids (grandparents and their grandkids) are playing together. This includes multiplayer of massively multiplayer games, co-op games, competitive games, or turn-based games where parent and child pass control back and forth or take on different roles. It also includes both digital and non-digital games.
As is the style of Well Played, these peer-reviewed essays should document and analyze
meaning-making through game play (including images and videos) as well as how the interactions and roles of parent and child are mediated by and mediate game play. All essays must include the voice (preferably co-authored) of both the parents and the children. Multi-authored papers from more than two family members are welcomed. While the intention is to focus on an game play with at least one player under 18, interactions between parents and adult children will also be considered.

The Well Played Journal is a forum for in-depth close readings of video games that parse out the various meanings to be found in the experience of playing a game. It is a reviewed journal open to submissions that will be released on a regular basis.
Contributors are encouraged to analyze sequences in a game in detail in order to illustrate and interpret how the various components of a game can come together to create a fulfilling playing experience unique to this medium. Through contributors, the journal will provide a variety of perspectives on the value of games.
The goal of the journal is to continue developing and defining a literacy of games as well as a sense of their value as an experience. Video games are a complex medium that merits careful interpretation and insightful analysis. By inviting contributors to look closely at video games and the experience of playing them, we hope to expand the discussion, and show how games are well played in a variety of ways.
The ETC Press is an academic and open-source publishing imprint that distributes its work in print, electronic and digital form.
