STEP Lab’s Calculus Project Featured in President Kornbluth’s Interview with The Tech
In her recent interview with The Tech, President Kornbluth emphasized MIT’s responsibility—and opportunity—to expand access to its educational resources nationwide. She highlighted the MIT for America Calculus Project, a new initiative launched this fall by the MIT Scheller Teacher Education Program (STEP) Lab to broaden access to calculus education for under-resourced high schools across the U.S.
Only about half of U.S. high schools offer calculus courses, according to a 2018 National Science Foundation report. The Calculus Project seeks to address this gap by recruiting MIT students and alumni to serve as calculus tutors for schools that lack the resources to provide advanced math coursework. President Kornbluth shared her hope that more MIT students will volunteer and that the program will help better prepare high school students—particularly those from underserved communities—for universities like MIT.
