I too prefer a standalone Windows App with no registry filetype association.
The reason is that our student accounts in our high school do not have
administrative privileges.
I rather have my students download StarLogo whenever they want and run it,
instead of me having to log in as administrator to install it for them.

We've been using the standalone version of Scratch with no registry filetype
association, and it's been wonderful. My students can download and run Scratch
at home, knowing that it runs like in school. All the project demo files are
in the same location, and they can open their own saved project files from
their
flash drive, etc.

With that said, I think if StarLogo ever extends to networked applications,
then non-standalone install is necessary. If I ever need to teach a unit on
networked applications, I wouldn't mind the extra administrative install.

I will start using StarLogo after the my students finish working a few more
projects with Scratch.

You guys at MIT Media are doing a wonderful service for the younger students.
My student population is 90% low-income (Title I) and 90% Hispanic with a large
percentage immigrants (Title III). My students really appreciate your effort
in helping them understand computer science technology. Thanks and know that
your hard work is appreciated.
