There should be no need to compile open starlogo. You can download a linux version complete with shell scripts from the starlogo site and then swap in the slightly updated "jar" file from open starlogo.

Subject: [starlogo-users] another Linux problem
Hi,
I have recently switched all my computer dwellings to openSUSE 10.2 so as I
am attached to starLogo very much I had to get it over to that system also.
Alas, this I can not do. I just don't know how to compile that code I
downloaded from openStarLogo site, albeit running it. So any tutorial-like
help on this matter will greatly simplify my work and further learning of
this wonderful environment. Not to mention gratitude.
Cheers,
Milos
