STEP Training
MIT STEP offers a teacher licensing program that can be done entirely at MIT or in conjunction with courses at Wellesley College. This program licenses students to teach mathematics or science in grades 5-12. The Scheller Teacher Education Program, offered through the Department of Urban Studies and Planning, prepares MIT students to become teachers who are competent to teach in their field, willing to challenge established norms, able to bridge the boundaries among disciplines, and eager to help students develop the desire to question and explore. For Educators
STEP is actively engaged in many research and development projects, designing and testing new learning technologies for use in formal and informal education. While some projects are in limited testing with partners, others are freely available for all to try and to use (some complete with curriculum and assessment). Welcome to STEP
The Next STEP For more than 15 years the Scheller Teacher Education Program has been training MIT undergraduates to become secondary school science and math teachers. During that time there have been many changes, as the program has grown and expanded its reach. Nearly a dozen staff, plus undergraduates and masters students from computer science and Comparative Media Studies work on the many research and development projects going on in the lab. These research projects include design, development, implementation, and research around new ways of teaching math and science through games and simulations. The expansion of the STEP program has led us to new quarters in the Media Lab Complex (our building is known as E15, or the Weisner, building on campus), which we felt in turn deserved a new web site. This blog marks the launch of that site, with a new design and a pipeline for more frequent updates and information from and about the lab. As the new site begins to roll out we will provide blogs from the STEP community (also include members of The Education Arcade), and we will highlight recent and ongoing work, like our brand new UbiqBio (ubiquitous games for biology) project, provide updates on longstanding projects like StarLogo TNG and MITAR (augmented reality), and share insights from successful collaborations such as Lure of the Labyrinth. We hope you enjoy and learn from the new site, and stay tuned over the next few months for our overhaul and updates to continue.
